Can your boss ask for your Facebook password? Not for long.

Illinois has long had laws related to an employee’s right to privacy in the workplace.  In the early 1990s, the Illinois General Assembly passed the Right to Privacy in the Workplace Act.  This Act was initially designed to prevent employers from requiring employees to share private information.  For example, employers were prohibited from seeking information about workers’ compensation claims.

Does tagging someone on Facebook violate their right to privacy?

Three Illinois men have filed a lawsuit against Facebook alleging that the social network’s use of facial recognition software violates their privacy interests.  The suit, which was originally filed in Cook County, was transferred to the Northern District of California last summer.  The lawsuit is brought under the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act.  740 ILCS 14/1.  The men claim that this statute gives them a property interest in their biometric data that Facebook is violating.  Facebook, conversely, has argued that this lawsuit, and other similar suits, should be thrown out because there is no real harm or damage and, thus, no grounds on which to bring a claim.

Can posting on social media cost you money? Jail time?

According to a 2016 study, over 60 percent of the adult population of the United States has at least one social media profile.  A majority of these users use their social media accounts daily.  With numbers like these, it can be easy to forget that Facebook was launched just a little over a decade ago.  Other social media sites and applications, like Instagram and Snapchat, are not even a decade old.

Did ESPN violate NFL Star Jason Pierre-Paul’s privacy when posting his medical records online?

The start of the NFL season has become an unofficial holiday. I count myself among those excited for the season to begin.  But wherever the NFL is, controversy

It was a little over a year ago when ESPN analyst Adam Schefter tweeted out a photo of New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul’s medical chart.  This infamous picture revealed that Jason Pierre-Paul’s right index finger had been amputated following a fireworks accident.  Before this tweet, information regarding Jason’s injury had been mostly conjecture.
